Characteristics of Surface Currents in a Shallow Lagoon–Inlet–Coastal Ocean System Revealed by Surface Drifter Observations

چکیده
The circulation in a shallow lagoon–inlet–coastal ocean system is significant to material transports (e.g., debris, pollutants, and larvae). To study surface flows this system, we deployed 35 drifters at various tidal phases wind conditions during 2017 2018 the Maryland Coastal Bays (MCBs). Given that winds tides are two important drivers of estuarine coastal circulation, their influences on drifter trajectories were analyzed. Observations indicate exit (enter) lagoon mostly ebb (flood) currents, clockwise circular movements length scale 1.5 km formed outer edge Ocean City Inlet (OCI). Under weak conditions, primarily responsible for near OCI, whereas both long-fetch relatively larger Chincoteague backbays. strong generally follow directions. In lagoonal relative effects gradually become stronger regions further away from adjacent inlet as weaker. Further investigations fastest slowest small OCI backbays with weakened tides, respectively. direct observations cover wide spatial range long time series can provide support current simulations. Enhanced understanding physical oceanography MCBs be beneficial similar systems communities.

Spurious trends in global surface drifter currents
The Global Drifter Program (GDP) has been measuring near-surface ocean currents with surface drifters since 1979. At least half of the World Ocean now has drifter velocity time series longer than 15 years. The availability of this data opens new opportunities to explore observationally how ocean circulation responds to changing surface forcing. In this paper we report evidence of an apparently ...
متن کاملHigh-frequency radar observations of ocean surface currents.
This article reviews the discovery, development, and use of high-frequency (HF) radio wave backscatter in oceanography. HF radars, as the instruments are commonly called, remotely measure ocean surface currents by exploiting a Bragg resonant backscatter phenomenon. Electromagnetic waves in the HF band (3-30 MHz) have wavelengths that are commensurate with wind-driven gravity waves on the ocean ...

A new small drifter prototype for measuring current immediately below the free surface in a water basin is proposed in this paper. The drifter dimensionsmake it useful for shallowwater applications. The drifter transmits its GPS location via GSMphone network. The drifter was used to study the trajectory of the surface current in the Muggia bay, the latter containing the industrial harbor of the ...
متن کاملOn surface drift currents in the ocean
A new model of surface drift currents is constructed using the full nonlinear equations of motion. This model includes the balance between Coriolis forces due to the mean and wave-induced motions and the surface wind stresses. The approach used in the analysis is similar to the work by Craik & Leibovich (1976) and Leibovich (1977), but the emphasis is on the mean motion rather than the small-sc...
